‘MOL Comfort sank due to yet unclear reasons,
sailing from Singapore to Jeddah and after that to North Europe, leaving
behind hundreds of drifting containers and a huge aftershock hitting
liner sector and all of the maritime industry.
Even
the scale of the consequences is hard, impossible, to estimate, not to
mention consequences themselves. This is the 1st case in liner sector,
when modern ocean-going liner container vessel (built in Japan!) sank in
the ocean after breaking in 2 parts, like a poorly built and managed
bulk carrier or over aged coaster. Nothing like this ever occurred, and
no one believed it was possible, even theoretically. It just could not
happen, but still, here it is.’

The House of Representatives voted late Wednesday to prohibit the
Department of Homeland Security from using taxpayer dollars to buy and
stockpile ammunition until they provide a “comprehensive report” to
Congress on its ammunition usage, purchase history and contracting
practices.
“Prior to committing taxpayer dollars for ammunition contracts, we
must ensure that government agencies justify the necessity and cost to
both Congress and the American people,” said Representative Mark Meadows
(R.-N.C.), the amendment’s author.
The House approved the amendment to H.R. 2217,
Department of Homeland Security Appropriations Act of 2014, by a
234-192 vote. Notably, eighteen democrats supported the amendment and
only thirteen republicans opposed. Meadows cited concerns over the
current practices and purchases of the Department as justification for
the proposal.
“Earlier this year, we learned that DHS solicited bids for 1.1 billion rounds of ammunition,” Meadows said in a statement.
“This is more than ten times the amount that the department purchased
in fiscal year 2012. Given current inventory, DHS has nearly 4,000
rounds for each employee trained and certified in firearms use.”
The Government Accountability Office is currently investigating
that large purchases made by the DHS. Such reports of the government
purchasing mass quantities of ammunition and efforts to enact more
restrictive gun-control legislation have compounded to spark a mass
increase in demand for guns and ammunition — the likes of which many
industry employees say they have never seen. (RELATED: Gun ranges forced to ration due to extreme ammo shortages)
The amendment requires the Secretary of Homeland Security to submit a
detailed report to Congress of the Department’s mission requirements as
it pertains to ammunition and “all contracting practices applied by the
Department of Homeland Security to procure ammunition.” The report
must also indicate all contract options and compare cost and
availability.
Additionally, the amendment requires the Department to report
“quarterly thereafter” to Congress the quantity of ammunition in
inventory, used by and purchased by the Department of Homeland during
and at the end of each calendar quarter. It even stipulates the
Department provide “the ammunition type, the purpose of such usage, the
average number of rounds used per agent or officer.”
Congressman Bridenstine (R-OK) saw the passage of the amendment as
“an important step toward achieving the goals of the AMMO Act, H.R. 1764, which I co-sponsored.”
“The AMMO Act sets specific limits on the quantity of ammunition that
can be purchased by each covered federal agency, while this bill only
prohibits further purchase contracts by this one Department until it
reports to Congress,” Bridenstine said in a statement.
The House passed the FY 2014 Department of Homeland Security
Appropriations Act on Thursday. It provides $38.9 billion in
discretionary funds for the DHS and now awaits Senate action.
At a Democratic fundraiser last night, Barack Obama praised the
progress he's made as president. "Across the board, people are feeling
like, all right, America is moving and it’s moving in the right
direction," he said.
Obama continued, "But what we also know --"
"Good job, Mr. President. Good job," an audience member interrupted,
before breaking out into applause, according to the official White
House transcript.
"What we also know is, is that we’ve got a lot more work to do.
Because all across the country, we still have people who are looking for
work and can’t find it. We still have young people in schools that
aren’t learning what they need to compete in the 21st century. We still
have young people who are burdened by massive college costs. We still
have infrastructure that needs to be rebuilt. We’ve got research
projects that could help to revolutionize our economy, but are not being
adequately funded. We have folks whose homes are still underwater and
they’re still struggling. And people are concerned about the
possibilities of retiring with dignity and respect," Obama continued.
"So we’ve got a lot more work to do. And the
reason I’m here today is to ask for your help. I’m very proud of the
record that we’ve been able to put together over the last four and half
years, making sure that every American in this country gets health care,
and we are implementing health care reform so that every single
American -- (applause) -- is able to get health care and won’t go
bankrupt when they get sick."
President Obama and his family will be going to Africa later
this month. But the trip won't be cheap; it's expected to cost American
taxpayers $60 to $100 million, according to the Washington Post.
"When President Obama makes his first extended trip to sub-Saharan
Africa later this month, the federal agencies charged with keeping him
safe won’t be taking any chances. Hundreds of U.S. Secret Service agents
will be dispatched to secure facilities in Senegal, South Africa and
Tanzania. A Navy aircraft carrier or amphibious ship, with a fully
staffed medical trauma center, will be stationed offshore in case of
emergency," reports the Post.
"Military cargo planes will airlift in 56 support vehicles, including
14 limousines and three trucks loaded with sheets of bullet-proof glass
to cover the windows of the hotels where the first family will stay.
Fighter jets will fly in shifts giving 24-hour coverage over the
president’s airspace so they can intervene quickly if an errant plane
gets too close.
"The extraordinary security provisions — which will cost the
government tens of millions of dollars — are outlined in a confidential
internal planning document obtained by The Washington Post. While the
preparations appear to be in line with similar travels in the past, the
document offers an unusual glimpse into the colossal efforts to protect
the U.S. commander-in-chief on trips abroad."
After the paper questioned the costs of a planned family safari, the
White House nixed the plan. "The president and first lady had also
planned to take a Tanzanian safari as part of the trip, which would have
required the president’s special counter-assault team to carry sniper
rifles with high-caliber rounds that could neutralize cheetahs, lions or
other animals if they became a threat, according to the planning
document. But the White House canceled the safari on Wednesday following
inquiries from The Washington Post about the trip’s purpose and
expense, according to a person familiar with the decision."
The paper adds, "Obama’s trip could cost the federal government $60
million to $100 million based on the costs of similar African trips in
recent years, according to one person familiar with the journey who was
not authorized to speak for attribution. The Secret Service planning
document, which was provided to The Post by a person who is concerned
about the amount of resources necessary for the trip, does not specify
costs."

Ben Swann Reality Check takes a look at how the United States government
created Al Qaeda and yet in some countries is still fighting them while
in others is supporting them.
Question...Why are we Fighting Al Qaeda in Afghanistan, but Arming Al Qaeda in Syria?
The U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee has voted to send a bill to
the floor for a vote that authorizes “critical support to the Syrian
opposition through provision of military assistance, training, and
additional humanitarian support.”
The bill's official title is the Syria Transition Support Act,
and its two co-authors were Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) and Senator
Bob Corker (R-TN). Aside from providing weaponry and armamments, the
bill includes:
• “Creation of a $250 million transition fund each year through FY2015
drawn from funds otherwise appropriated for regional transition
support”;
• “Sanctions on arms and oil sales to Assad: Targeting any person that
the President of the United States determines has knowingly
participated in or facilitated a transaction related to the sale or
transfer of military equipment, arms, petroleum, or petroleum products
to the Assad regime.”; and
• “Amendment to the Syria Accountability Act: To allow for sanctions
removal once a transitional government is in place and certain terrorism
and WMD criteria have been met.”
That last one is important, and we'll return to it later.
The bill easily got through committee 15-3, and the only Senator to offer meaningful opposition was Senator Rand Paul ( R-KY).
“This is an important moment. You will be funding, today, the allies of al Qaeda,” Paul said.
The biggest and most prominent armed factions in the Syrian resistance
are outright al-Qaeda affiliates like Jabhat al-Nusra and the Syrian
Free Army, which is a mixture of Muslim Brotherhood and al-Qaeda
dominated factions. Even the new 'official' Syrian resistance groups
President Obama formed as a figleaf, the Syrian Opposition
Coalition,(SOC)and the associated Joint Military Council are dominated
by the Muslim Brotherhood.The leader of the SOC is one Ahmed Mouaz al-Khatib,
former imam of the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus, a religious cleric
closely allied to the Damascus branch of the Muslim Brotherhood and
fairly hardline and radical himself.
Senator Paul tried to tack two amendments on to the bill, one that would
have forbidden the transfer of weapons to the radical Islamists of the
rebel forces and another that would have prevented the use of U.S.
military armed forces in Syria.
Both were voted down.
There were the usual pro-forma remarks from Paul's colleagues about
'oversight' and transparency' but in the end, there's nothing to stop
the Syrian rebels from simply telling us what we want to hear to get
weapons and our money, and then turning those guns on whomever they
wish...including us. The Qu'ran tells Muslims explicitly that any
promise made to kuffars (non-Muslims), any treaty or agreement is null
and void whenever it's convenient.
Anyone taken a look at what's happening in Afghanistan lately?
Just for the record, (not that it matters), the original Authorization
for the Use of Military Force (AUMF) enacted after 9/11 specifically
called for finding and destroying al-Qaeda..and here we are a few years
later voting to supply arms to them!
What this is setting the stage for is a formalization of President's
Obama's desire to put Islamists in charge of yet another Muslim country.
What happened in Benghazi
was a failed Fast and Furious style covert attempt to purchase and
send weapons from Khaddaffi's arsenals to the Syrian rebels. That
failed, so now we're going to be doing it openly.
Americans traditionally rally behind a sitting president when there's a
foreign intervention or crisis, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if a
U.S. intervention in Syria wasn't timed to head off the fallout from the
massive scandals the Obama regime finds itself entangled in of late.
